Murray wins Rogers Cup

There is now a new #2 ranked tennis player in the world. Andy Murray of Britain has defeated Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina to claim the Rogers Cup in Montreal. Murray prevailed in the grueling Montreal heat, roaring back after losing the first set in a tiebreak, ultimately winning 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-1.

Murray's efficient all-around game and great physical and mental endurance proved to be key in defeating a red hot, hard-hitting del Potro. After needing 2hrs and 17mins to play the first two sets, del Potro ran out of gas, unable to compete with Murray who easily took the last set 6-1 in only 25mins. It should be noted however that the last two weeks were very demanding for the Argentinian, as he won last week's tournament in Washington D.C, before continuing his run all the way to the finals here in Montreal. This is Murray's fifth tournament win this year, matching a career-best and placing him just behind world No. 1 Roger Federer in the ATP rankings.

The hot conditions certainly didn't seem to bother tennis fans in Montreal, as the finals were played in front of another sell-out crowd of 11,490 at the Stade Uniprix. The total attendance reached 200,077 people, breaking the attendance record of 185,252 for a 1-week ATP tournament set two years ago, here in Montreal.
